The absolute numbers seem to be obvious: In the time span from 2008 to 2016 out of 3.8 million, 1.6 million first time asylum applications were lodged in Germany – more than the numbers of France, Sweden and Italy combined.

Yet if you look at the relation of applications to number of inhabitants or gross domestic product, smaller and economically weaker countries accepted more asylum seekers than Germany.

  • Malta, Cyprus and Sweden accept the most people in relation to number of inhabitants.
  • Hungary and Italy are second and third, following Germany when looking at the GDP.
  • Most accepted asylum applications have been recorded in Bulgaria (78%), while only 8% have been accepted in Greece.
